A proper independent van door locking system should be judged against how vans are actually attacked, not how security looks in a catalog. Crowbar attacks are common because thieves are fast and aggressive. They force a gap at the door edge and try to pop the latch or bend the skin enough to release the opening.
Door peeling is another serious threat, especially on side loading doors. The upper corner or edge is forced away from the body to create access to the latch area. Once the skin starts moving, the thief is trying to turn the structure of the door against itself. That is why anti-peel protection and deadbolt placement matter together. A strong bolt helps, but if the surrounding area can still be folded back easily, the door remains vulnerable.

Start with the locking principle. A heavy-duty deadbolt gives better physical separation than devices that only reinforce the original latch area. Material thickness, bolt diameter, bracket design, and mounting method all matter because forced entry loads are ugly and uneven in the real world.
The system also needs to be genuinely independent. That means it remains secure regardless of what happens to the OEM lock. If it depends on factory locking status to stay engaged, you have not solved the main problem.
Concealed exterior security is another strong advantage. Big external hasps and visible hardware can advertise where to attack. A more discreet setup reduces obvious attack points and keeps the van looking professional. For many tradespeople and fleet operators, that matters as much as the hardware strength.
Remote operation can be a major benefit if it is engineered properly. A remote controlled deadbolt with secure rolling-code electronics gives you quick access without leaving the door security tied to the van's original central locking. That said, electronics should support the deadbolt, not replace it. The security still comes from the physical bolt and bracket doing their job under load.
Installation is worth more attention than most buyers give it. A system can look good on paper and still be compromised by poor fitment. Vehicle-specific hardware, clean wiring, and plug-and-play installation all reduce fitting errors. That means faster deployment and more consistent protection across a single van or a larger fleet.

This is where a one-size-fits-all answer falls short. The best security layout is based on your van model, where it is parked, how often each door is used, and what cargo loss would actually cost you in missed jobs and replacement expense.
The real trade-off: convenience versus forced-entry resistance
There is always a trade-off in van security. More protection usually means an extra action, another remote, or a more deliberate locking routine. For some owners, that is a minor change. For others with constant stop-start work, it can feel like friction.
But that trade-off needs to be measured against what tool theft really costs. It is not just the value of the stolen kit. It is the lost day, the canceled calls, the replacement scramble, the insurance excess, the premium impact, and the damage to the van itself. A system that adds a few seconds to your routine can save weeks of disruption.

If your van is empty most of the time and parked in secured indoor storage every night, your needs may be lighter. But that is not how many trade vans operate. Electricians, plumbers, telecom installers, HVAC techs, mobile mechanics, builders, locksmiths, and fleet managers all carry items that are easy to resell and expensive to replace.
For those users, independent locking is less about adding another gadget and more about fixing a known weakness. The system earns its keep when the factory lock has failed as a security barrier and the cargo area still does not open. That is the whole point.
