A side door can look fully locked while still being the weakest point on a working van. Tool theft is not just the cost of replacing drills, testers, stock, or equipment. What van peeling is and why it works
Van peeling is a forced-entry method aimed mainly at sliding side load doors, although rear doors can also be attacked. The thief drives a pry bar or crowbar into a vulnerable edge, then levers the door skin and frame away from the vehicle body. Once the gap is large enough, they may reach the latch, strike the locking mechanism, or simply create an opening large enough to remove tools.
Factory central locking is designed for normal vehicle use, not prolonged leverage from a steel bar. Even when the vehicle is locked and alarmed, the latch area, thin door skin, and surrounding frame may still be vulnerable to attack. A thief does not always need to defeat the remote locking electronics if they can physically distort the door.
This is why a standard alarm, dashboard warning sticker, or basic padlock-style hasp should not be treated as anti-peel protection. Each can have a place in a wider security setup, but none reinforces the point being attacked.
How to protect a van from peeling at the door edge
The most effective approach is to add purpose-built mechanical protection at the side door. An anti-peel bracket is designed to reinforce the vulnerable area where a crowbar is commonly inserted and where leverage can start to separate the door from the body.

Add an independent deadbolt, not just another lock

A factory lock generally relies on the vehicle's original central locking system, wiring, latch, and control module. If a thief compromises that system through electronic manipulation, a damaged lock cylinder, or an attack on the latch, the factory lock may no longer be the barrier you expected.
An independent deadbolt creates a separate locking point that remains locked even if the vehicle's original locking system is defeated. On a working van, that separation matters. The thief has to overcome another physical barrier, often while dealing with a door that is already reinforced against peeling.
Remote-controlled deadbolts can be especially practical for drivers making repeated stops. They allow the additional lock to be operated without adding a slow manual routine at every job. Look for a system with secure rolling-code remotes, solid steel locking components, and an installation design that does not require cutting into the exterior of the van.
There is a trade-off. More security hardware means more components to fit and maintain, and you need to make sure the door can still operate freely. That is why model-specific, installation-ready systems are usually a better choice than adapting generic locks to a commercial vehicle.
Protect the side door before the rear doors
For many tradespeople, the sliding side door is the priority because it is the most frequently attacked access point. It is often parked close to a curb, fence, wall, or another vehicle, where a thief can work with less attention. It also gives fast access to shelves full of tools.
That does not mean rear doors can be ignored. If expensive equipment is stored at the back, protect those doors with independent locking as well. The right setup depends on how the van is loaded and where it is parked. A plumber with stock accessed through the side door may prioritize anti-peel side-door hardware. A contractor carrying larger equipment at the rear may need equal protection at both ends.
Walk around your van and identify the likely attack route. Look at gaps around the door edges, exposed latch areas, and places where a pry bar could be inserted. Then secure the doors that give the quickest route to the equipment thieves want.
Build layers that work together
Physical door security is the main defense against peeling, but it performs best as part of a layered setup. The aim is not to promise that a van can never be attacked. The aim is to make entry difficult enough that the thief must spend more time, make more noise, and face more risk than they are willing to accept.
A practical security setup can include:

Avoid upgrades that create a false sense of security
Some common security measures deter opportunistic theft without offering serious resistance to peeling. Window stickers, flashing LEDs, and lightweight aftermarket locks may make a van look protected, but they do not reinforce the door or provide a second independent locking point.
Likewise, do not assume thicker-looking external hardware is automatically stronger. If it is attached through thin sheet metal, mounted with accessible fasteners, or positioned away from the real leverage point, a determined thief may bypass it quickly. Good security is about the complete load path: the steel, the mounting points, the lock position, and the vehicle structure all have to work together.
Be cautious about drilling unnecessary holes in the exterior. Apart from creating potential corrosion points, exposed fittings can show attackers where to focus. A cleaner installation with protected fixings and concealed security components is generally harder to assess and attack.
Check installation and daily operation
After fitting anti-peel hardware and deadbolts, test every door repeatedly. Open and close the sliding door through its full travel. Confirm that seals sit correctly, the factory latch engages cleanly, and no hardware rubs against the bodywork. If a door has become difficult to close, correct the issue rather than forcing it. A badly aligned door can damage locks, wear components early, and make your daily routine frustrating.
Inspect the system regularly, especially after body repairs, heavy impacts, or work in harsh weather. Check mounting hardware for movement, look for damaged paint or corrosion around fixings, and make sure remote locks respond consistently. Security equipment needs to be ready every evening, not just on the day it was installed.
